Turning waste into money

Torrefaction is a process to produce a high-value bio-coal from wood and agro waste streams. The end product is a stable, homogeneous, high quality bio-coal with far greater energy density and calorific value than the original feedstock, providing significant benefits in logistics, handling and storage. Your license to operate

To reduce emissions of CO2 co-firing of biomass in coal-fired power plants is supported. By default white pellets are used. But co-firing of white pellets is limited to 30% so cannot effectively replace coal. Besides that, white pellets do not have the physical properties of bio-coal. Do you face CO2 emission targets and do you want to keep your asset running by co-firing bio-coal? Please, drop us a line.

Black is beautiful

In contrast to steam exploded and white pellets torrefied biomass results in black, brittle, hydrophobic material and has a heating value in the range of coal. After grinding, the material can be densified and pressed into black pellets to create bio-coal. If you are you interested in genuine torrefied black pellets, you call us.

a.hak invests in Torr®Coal

A.Hak Renewable Energy BV and AKA-BEL NV are, as equal partners, the primary shareholders of Torr-Coal Technology BV. Both parties now own 48% of the company’s shares.
The Torr-Coal group revolves around the development and commercialization of torrefaction technology. A fully operational plant is located in the Belgian municipality Dilsen-Stokkem. Here, biomass is torrefied to realize an annual output of 30.000 tonnes of Bio-Coal.

Torr-Coal Technology BV is an innovative eco-technological enterprise, its objective is to develop torrefaction technology. Torrefaction is a method in which low-grade biomass, originating from agriculture and forestry, is converted into a solid fuel with a high energy density. This fuel is called Bio-Coal.

In comparison to biomass, that is dried and pressed into white pellets without being torrefied, Bio-Coal has various important benefits. As the energy density of Bio-Coal is considerably higher, transport costs are reduced. It also offers a more constant quality and Bio- is more easily processed than white pellets, partially due to the water repellant properties of Bio-Coal, and the fact that the substance can be ground very easily.

The Bio-Coal industry is on the verge of a considerable expansion which will strongly influence the white pellet market (over 35 million tonnes annually). Located in the Belgian municipality Dilsen-Stokkem is a Torr-Coal plant with an annual output of 30,000 tonnes of Bio-Coal, created by converting biomass. In 2015, the sales commenced of torrefaction installations in countries and regions possessing large quantities of biomass that are currently not utilized; including Canada, Indonesia, Africa, South America and Russia.

Luck Westerbaan, Division Director of A. Hak Renewable Energy BV:

I am very pleased with A. Hak’s accession into the Torr-Coal Group. This step entirely fits into the A.Hak Renewable Energy’s objective of contributing to a ‘bio-

based economy’. We will take on the role of being an EPC partner in the process of creating installations on locations with an abundance of biomass. In a later phase, we will be able to deploy the gasification technology of our partner Torrgas to use Bio- Coal for the creation of synthetic gas (syngas) with a constant quality. Constructing the gasification plant in Delfzijl in the northeastern Netherlands is scheduled for 2016 and 2017.”

Willem van Geenhuizen, former A. Hak CEO:

A.Hak actively participates in the development of sustainable energy technology. An aspect that resonates with me personally, is the fact that large stocks of biomass that are currently going to waste all over the world, can now be used as a cleaner source of energy. By combining our vast experience in international business operations and our expertise in the field of industrial installations, A.Hak is a highly suitable partner to support the realization of the required torrefaction plants across the globe.

Jan Brouwers, Company Director of the Torr-Coal Group: “Our team is proud of the fact that we, after many years of development and industrializing our torrefaction process, are now able to take an important step forward. Together with A.Hak Renewable Energy, we are ready for a global roll-out of the Torr-Coal torrefaction technology.

Aljo van Dijk, AKA-BEL NV CEO: We are pleased with this new shareholder, as it allows us to safeguard our future plans. It is a globally operating firm with expertise in the field of large EPC projects
